Biography

When Maggie Lee Wilhoite was born on 29 June 1884, in Owen, Kentucky, United States, her father, Jeptha Willhoite, was 44 and her mother, Matilda Emma "Maggie" Towles, was 40.

She married James Walter Keith on 22 March 1900, in Owen, Kentucky, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 5 daughters.

Maggie was living with her new in-laws on 1 June 1900 in the Hesler precinct of Owen County, Kentucky when Joseph Lucas Reed gathered the data for the US Census, Maggie is 16 years old now, and she is assisting Mrs. Priscilla Keith care for the large family. James is working as farm labor and paying his father rent.

Her husband, James had moved the family of 5 to Sawdridge Turnpike which was south of Monterey in the southwestern part of Owen County by the 1910 Census. Charels A Claxon interviewed them on April 27th that year. The family consisted of James, Maggie L., Scottie-8, May-4 and Aura Belle who was 1 year old. James is renting a farm to provide for his family. Maggie and her husband both are able to read and write.

The James Keith family was still living in the same vicinity when Ezra Webster conducted the Census work on January 24th, 1920. James had purchased a farm on Sawdridge Pike. The family had grown to include Emma-8, Elmer V.-5 and Viola who was 2 years and 8 months. James is still farming, and Maggie is still keeping the house.

W. W. Oliver locates the James Keith family on Cedar Creek Rd, in southern Owen County on April 14th, 1930. Only the two younger children are remaining at home now, Elmer and Viola. James and Maggie own the farm they're living on. They don't have a radio at this time.

Before 1935 James and Maggie moved to their farm on Claxon's Ridge Rd. This farm has a value of $1500.00. According to Mr. Leon Young who conducted the 1940 Census on April 3 of that year, James or Maggie neither one ever attended school. but they were able to read and write. James earned $700.00 in 1939.

James and Maggie had sold their property on Claxon's Ridge and moved to the Hesler Community on US Hwy 227, known today as Georgetown Rd. Kathryn Jones was the US Census enumerator on May 4th, 1950. James was recorded as being 69, Maggie was 65 and her older sister, Armelda Wilhoite who was a widow, was residing with them. James is farming to support his family.

Maggie was a faithful member of the Hesler Assembly of God Church.

She died on 22 May 1968, she was a patient at the Owen County Memorial Hospital, in Owen, Kentucky, United States, at the age of 83, and was buried in Owenton, Owen, Kentucky, United States.
