Biography

Ann Eliza (Williams) Smith spent most of her life residing in (or near) Buckingham and Erwinna, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. After her husband died, she lived by herself for about 18 years before moving in with her only child, John Williams Smith, who was living in Stockton, Hunterdon, New Jersey.
She was very involved in the Methodist Episcopal church in Stockton (Presbyterian??). (I suspect that this was due to its proximity to her home. At this point in her life, she was a middle-aged to elderly woman living pretty far away from the church she grew up in. The closest meeting-house to Stockton would have been near Kingswood -- at least, I believe that meeting-house was still active at the time.) Ann Eliza was buried in the cemetery behind Buckingham Friends Meeting House, Buckingham, Bucks, Pennsylvania with her husband and with their ancestors.

Birth

Ann Eliza (Williams) Smith was born near Erwinna, Bucks, Pennsylvania on July 30, 1812. Her parents were John Williams and Christiana Moore. She had one older sister (Mary), two older brothers (Newbury and James), a younger brother (Barzilla), and a younger sister (Caroline.)

Marriage

Ann Eliza Williams married Jonas Smith at Buckingham Friends Meeting House, Buckingham, Bucks, Pennsylvania. However, I do not have an exact date. I'm just sure of the location without having any real proof.

Buckingham Friends

Ann Eliza (Williams) Smith was probably a birthright Quaker. She was definitely descended from MANY generations of Quakers on the Williams side of her family -- going back to at least the mid to late-1700's. (Because of information in Ann Eliza's obituary, I know that her mother was of German descent. However, I am quite sure that Christiana (Moore) Williams was a Quaker -- birthright or not!) In a book printed for the 200th anniversary of the Buckingham Friends Meeting House, it said that Ann E. Smith was the first superintendent of their school and that she had been an Elder of the church from 1879-1880. (I only hope that it refers to THIS Ann E. Smith!!!)[1]

NOTE: Biographical Sketch of Eliza's brother, James in Battle's book on Bucks County (Paraphrase/Abstract the relevant info: it's in Heritage Quest Books and might still be under copyright, but I'm not sure. Will need to figure out exactly how to reference it here. There's LOTS of info about the Williams family in the sketch!)
