"John Williams, a pioneer settler and ancestor to numerous citizens of this section of Georgia, was born in 1799. His first known residence was in Liberty County, where he married Miss Nancy Smith, daughter of Revolutionary soldier, William Smith."
"In about 1827-1827, John Williams and family moved from Liberty County to the 7th land district of what was then part of Ware County. They settled on Red Bluff Creek where Mr. Williams acquired lots of land, 149 and 174, establishing his homeplace on lot 149."
"On May 2, 1827, John Williams was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of the militia in the 586th militia district, serving until September 16, 1830. He was then commissioned Captain in the same district and served as Captian for two years."
"In 1850, both of Williams' lots of land, 149 and 174 were cut out of Ware into Clinch County; and, in 1918, cut out of Clinch into Atkinson County. These lands have remained part of Atkinson County ever since."
"During the Civil War, three of the Williams sons fought for the Confederacy and served together in Company "K" of the 26th Georgia Infantry Regiment."
"John Williams died in 1881 at the age of 82. His son Hezekiah Ponder was the administrator of the estate. The lands were Divided, in kind on April 21, 1881, with each heir receiving 80 acres of land. One son, Jackson S. died the following year. "
"John and Nacy Smith Williams were buried in the Red Bluff Church cemetery, which was located near their home. The land for the cemetery and the church was given by Mr. Williams soon after the end of the Civil War."
