Biography

John Foster Williams was born 23 Aug 1843 in Moreton Pinkney, Northamptonshire, England to Joseph Williams and Hannah Jane (Higham) Williams. His birth was registered in Brackley, Northamptonshire in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Higham.[1]

John's mother passed away in 1844. He also had two older sisters, but they both died very young.

In 1851 John Williams (age 7, Scholar) lived in Morton Pinkney with his father Joseph (38, Farmer of 86 Acres Employing 3 Lab), house keeper Leah Simmons (47), and servant William Haddon (23).[2]

John's father married Mary Ann Gilkes in 1853.

In 1861 John Williams (age 17, Farmers Son) lived at Lawn Hill in Morton Pinkney with his father Joseph (48, Farmer of 126 Acres Employing 3 Men & 2 Boys), stepmother Mary Ann (27), and four half-siblings: Elijah (6, Scholar), Jemima (4, Scholar), Eliza (2), and Mary Ann (0), as well as servant Eliza Prestidge (15, Dairymaid).[3]

John immigrated to Canada before 1871.

John Foster Williams (age 28, son of Joseph Williams & Hannah Higham) married Samantha Crozier (age 21, daughter of Robert Crozier & Susanna Draper) on 23 Aug 1871 in Leeds, Ontario, Canada.[4]

John and Samantha had twelve children.

In 1881 John F Williams (age 37, Baker) lived in Kemptville, North Leeds & Grenville, Ontario with his wife Mary S (31) and five children: Nina A M (8), John R (6), Ada E (4), Hanna W (2), and William (6 months).[5]

John and his family moved to the United States in about 1884.

In 1892 John F Williams (age 49, Agent) lived in Perinton, Monroe County, New York with his wife Mary (43) and nine children: Nina (20), John (18), Adda (16), Winnie (14), Elsie (10), Retta (8), Maud (6), James (4), and May (3).[6]

In 1900 J F Williams (age 57, Salesman Travelling) lived in Rochester City, Monroe with his wife Mary (51) and six children: Nina A (28), Celsu J (18, At School), Marg A (16, At School), Maud D (14, At School), James W (12, At School), and May (10, At School), as well as three boarders: Chester Miller (18, At School), Libby Lahey (27, Trained Nurse), and Adelain O Donnell (26, Trained Nurse).[7] According to this census, John's wife was the mother of 9 children, all of whom were still living (however, based on the next census, this seems to be incorrect - it should be 12 altogether with 9 still living).

In 1905 John F Williams (age 61, Salesman (Furs)) lived in Rochester with his wife Mary S (55, Housework) and five children: Elsie J (23, Book Keeper), Margaretta (21, Book Keeper), Maud (19, At School), James J (17, Telephone Maker), and Mae (15, At School).[8] According to this census, John's wife was the mother of 12 children, of whom 9 were still living.

In 1910 John F Williams (age 66, ?? Traveler Furs) lived at Monroe Ave in Rochester Ward 12 in the household of his son John R (35, Physician), along with his wife Mary S (61) and daughter Mary (20).[9]

In 1915 John F Williams (age 73) lived in Rochester Ward 12.[10]

John Foster Williams passed away on 16 Feb 1916 in Rochester.
