James was born in 1863. He was the son of farmer Joseph Williams and Mary Anne Gilkes.
He married Elizabeth Ann Barber on 30 December 1890 at St Giles, Northamptonshire.
Elizabeth's father was given as labourer Thomas Barber at their marriage.
