Biography

Early Life

Elijah Williams was born 11 Mar 1817 in CLaibourne County Tennessee to Williams Isaac Williams Jr and Pennybacker-9|Molly Polly (Pennybacker) Williams]].

Family

Elijah married Catherine Box on 22 Dec 1849 in London Kentucky.[1] Together they had ten children.

According to family oral history, Elijah and Katherine walked the Cumberland Trail from TN to settle in the London, KY area. Katherine carried clothes and some pots and pans and Elijah carried the children and the rest of their household goods. They probably knew Daniel Boone (since one of Elijah's brothers was named Daniel Boone Williams). They settled in London, KY which is about 60 miles or so from Boonesborough, KY.

After Catherine’s death, Elijah married Matilda Hamack on 10 Jun 1876.[2] Together they had 1 child

Occupation

Based on family oral history Elijah was a Baptist circuit rider preacher. During the Civil War he held tent meetings on both the Union and the Confederate sides. Toward the end of the war the Union command became suspicious that he may have been a spy for the Confederates, and were considering pressing charges. Fortunately, the war ended before any decision was made, and the matter was dropped.

Elijah was an elder at the Rough Creek Baptist Church near London, KY for many years.

Death & Legacy

He passed away in 1901 and is buried in Rough Creek (London City) Cemetery. [3]
