Biography

Notes for Lee Kemp Williams: Kemp Williams Mr. Lee Kemp Williams, 86, of Hemingway passed away Monday, October 18, 2010 at Conway Medical Center. Born February 5, 1924, he was the son of the late Lee Williams and Rebecca Miller Williams. Mr. Williams was a farmer and retired from International Paper. I worked with Kemp each summer while I was in college at International Paper. Sometimes we even rode together from Hemingway to Georgetown. Kemp was a friend of my Uncle Sammie and Uncle Junior. He was a member and former deacon at Center Baptist Church. He was a loving and devoted husband of 60 years. Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Army in WWII and central Europe and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Grier Williams of the home; daughter Phyllis (Johnny) Elliott of Hemingway; son Phil (Sue) Williams of Tallahassee, FL; grandsons Brant Elliott of Hemingway and Thomas Kemp Williams of Tallahassee, FL; granddaughters Corey (Wayne) Hughes of Hemingway and Rebecca Williams of Tallahassee, FL; great granddaughter Mahaley Hughes of Hemingway; great grandson Trevor Hughes of Hemingway; and sister Donna Hagood of Decatur, GA. Funeral services, conducted by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, October 21, 2010 at Center Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery. While on a genealogy research trip to the Georgetown, Williamsburg and Marion County area I was invited to Kemp and Gertrudes home. We had some very interesting discussions about Uncle Lee, Aunt Becky, Kemp, Gertrude and their families. Gertrude gave me a tour of Uncle Lees homestead. Kemp gave me a rundown of his Army service during the latter part of the Second World War.Including his part in the capture of Hitlers, Wolfs Lair". Unfortunately it was my first and only time to meet cousin Lee Kemp Williams. I went back to the area a couple of years later but they were out of town. With Kemp being part of "Our Greatest Generation" he was a true HERO.
