Elijah's first wife Mary Frances passed away at a young age; Elijah married her cousin Amanda Ruth Mathew. In this rural area, there were many generations of intermarriage between the Conyers, Williams, and Mathew families. Elijah, Mary Frances, Amanda Ruth, and Elijah & Mary's infant daughter Alice are buried in the Newmansville Cemetery. Elijah and Mary Frances grew up as neighbors, and attended the same church.
Elijah's daughter Nellie recounted to her own granddaughter, stories of traveling by wagon from Newmansville to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Elijah's health was failing due to an illness contracted during his Civil War service, and Hot Springs was expected to help. Sadly he passed away there.
