Joseph Williams was a farmer in Detroit, Michigan when he enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was described as having a light complexion, black eyes, and black hair. During his service he was detailed at Ft Green, Folly Island, South Carolina.[1]
Private in Company E of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during the Civil War. Enlisted on 4 April 1863 from Detroit, Michigan. He was about 21 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted.
