Biography

William was born to Asa and Sophia Williams on 17 Aug 1798 in New York (likely Nassau since that is where his parents lived and where he lived subsequently.[1]

In 1850, William (52 yo) owned and worked a farm in Nassau, Rensselaer, County, NY, worth $1,600. He lived with his family, wife Rebecca (52 yo), son James (17 yo) who also worked as a farmer for his father, Ray (15 yo) also a farmer, Mary (12 yo), Philoman (10 yo) and Patty (26 yo). An illiterate female worker, Alaven Babcock (18 yo), lived with the family as well.[2]

He was living in Nassau with wife and family (minus oldest son James H who had left home) in 1855.[3] The family included:

Hiram M. Bailey, son-in-law, age 23
Fanny M. Lasher, daughter, age 28
Hiram M. Lasher, son-in-law, age 39

Melvin Lasher, grandson, age 4

However, by 1865 the family had moved to Brooklyn, Kings County, New York where William, 66 yo) owned a brick home worth $6,000 and was working as a bookkeeper. Two of his sons (James 32 yo and George 24 yo) were living in the family home and working as bookkeepers as well.[4]

He died in Nassau on 26 Feb 1879 and is buried in the North Nassau, NY Cemetery.[5]
