Notes
N57The evidence for this John as the son or gandson of Sir Joseph is that John named his place opposite Jamestown, Cobham--the same as the family estate in Kent, England. See below from:
There is a tradition that John WIlliamson is the son of Sir Joseph Williamson, Secretary of State for England, and Katherine Stuart O'Brien. Evidence for this relationship is supposed to be that John Williamson built a manor in Surry, Virginia, named Cobham Hall, and that manor was supposed to be a replica of Sir Joseph's estate in England.
The tradition is not true. Katherine Stuart was descended from the Stuart line of Scotland and she and Sir Joseph Williamson are listed in the Complete Peerage. The Complete Peerage clearly states that Sir Joseph Williamson died without issue. He never owned Cobham Hall. Katherine Stuart inherited it from her ancestors, the Darnleys. After her death the estate passed into the possession of her daughter, Catherine O'Brien, by her first husband, Henry O'Brien.
