Biography

Elizabeth Williamson was born in 1839 at Braithwell, Yorkshire. She was baptised on the 8 December 1839 in the parish of Braithwell, the daughter of George and Alethea Williamson. Her father was a labourer.

In the 1841 census Elizabeth was residing with her parents and siblings at Braithwell. She was aged 1 year.

In 1851 the family was living in a Field House at Braithwell. Elizabeth was aged 11. Her father was then an agricultural labourer.

Jane, as her name was recorded, Williamson married Joseph Warrender on 24 June 1860 at the Cathedral Church of St Peter & St Paul, Sheffield. Their marriage certificate recorded was a bachelor aged 30 and a furnaceman. His father was named as Joseph Warrender, also a furnaceman. Elizabeth was a spinster aged 21. Her father was named as George Williamson, a farmer. At the time of their marriage both gave their address as Castle St. Their witnesses were David Hoggart[?] and Eliza Warrender. Both Joseph and Elizabeth signed with their mark, probably explaining the error in her name.

This couple had 7 known children named Edward born 1860, Ann Eliza born 1863, George born 1866, Mary Ellen born 1868, Joseph born 1870, Ellen born 1874 and Clara born 1879, all in Sheffield.

In 1861 This family was living at Grimesthorpe, Sheffield. Joseph, aged 37, was a furnaceman. Elizabeth was aged 22 and son Edward was aged 4 months.

In 1871 the family was at 13 Chester St, Sheffield. Joseph, aged 46, was then a furnace labourer. Elizabeth was aged 32. Children Edward, Annie, George and Joseph were aged 10, 8, 5 and 4 months respectively.

Joseph Warrander [sic] died in 1875 at Sheffield aged 48 years.

Elizabeth Warender [sic] remarried to Edward Simcox on 29 September 1879 at the Wicker parish church, Sheffield. Their marriage certificate recorded Edward was a widower aged 51 years and a puddler. His father was named as William Simcox, deceased. Elizabeth was a widow aged 40. Her father was named as George Williamson, deceased. Both Edward and Elizabeth were residing at Wicker at the time of their marriage. Their witnesses were Henry Hollows and Sarah Holland. All parties signed with their mark except Henry.

Edward had children living with him from his previous marriage

This couple had two children to their union named Lizzie Simcox [1881] and Edith Jane Simcox [1882], both born in Sheffield.

In 1881 the combined family was residing at 3 Ball or Bull Yard, Upwell St, Brightside Bierlow. Edward, aged 52, was employed as an ironworker. Elizabeth was aged 42. Edward Warrender, aged 20, and Theophilus Simcox, aged 18, were both employed as coal miners. George Warrender, aged 15, was a labourer in the ironworks. Fanny Simcox was aged 13. Joe, Nelly and Clara Warrender were aged 10, 6 and 2 respectively. And their own little Lizzie was aged 2 months. [RG11/4663 88 Pg 17]

Daughter Ellen Simcox was residing with the Abbey family at 7 Broomspring Lane, Ecclesall Bierlow. Aged 18 she was working as a domestic servant.

In 1891 the family was living at at 32 Bland St, Brightside Bierlow. Edward, aged 62, was working as a general labourer. His stepsons George and Joseph were labourers in a foundry. Stepdaughter Ellen, at 16, was working as a charwoman. The younger children were all still at school - Clara Warrender aged 13, Lizzie aged 10 and Edith aged 7. [RG12/3835 81 Pg 37]

Daughter Fanny was residing at Moorfield House, Greenacres, Oldham, the home of the Taylor family. Aged 25 she was working as a housemaid. [RG12/3314 110 Pg 3]

Edward Simcox died aged 72 years [Death Dec Qtr 1899/Wortley 9c 179]. Wortley is a registration district in West Riding, Yorkshire.

In 1901 Elizabeth, aged 62, and daughter Edith were living at 41 Bland St [same house? – different number?]. Edith, aged 19, was employed as a domestic servant. They also had three boarders living with them. [RG13/4380 114 Pg 8]

In 1911 Elizabeth was living with daughter Lizzie Marsh and her husband and children at 37 Adsetts St, Grimesthorpe, Sheffield.

Elizabeth Simcox died aged 72 years [Death Dec 1911/Rotherham 9c 823].
