Joel was born in Ashton under Lyne and christened 12 Jan 1794. He was the son of Neddy & Mary Williamson. In 1813 (aged about 19) he married Jane Andrew. They had many children together, the last born in 1834. His occupation is recorded variously in the children's christening records as weaver (1814, 1816), carter (1819), spinner (1822), carter (1829, 1830, 1833, 1835, 1839). Jane must have died between 1834 and 1837, because her death isn't in the civil registration index.
In 1846, Joel married again, to Ann Shepherd. They had four children together, one of whom died in infancy, before his death in 1853 at the age of 59. By 1851, Joel was running a small (8-acre) farm with the help of his son John. He seems to have lived all his life in the area of Smallshaw, Ashton under Lyne.
Occupation: Farmer Of 8 Acres With 1 Man.
