Biography

Margaret Ella Willie was the daughter of William P. Willie and Mary Ann Hunsaker. She married Robert Smith. They had five children. [1] Note: this collection contains sourced records for her children, Marion, Norma, Robert, and Ada. Visit the link and click on Sources to view these records.

In 1880, Margaret lived with her family in Mendon, Utah. The household included William, 31, a farmer, b. in Utah, whose Father was born in England and whose Mother was born in New York, USA; his wife Mary A., 24, born in Utah, whose mother was born in Canada, and whose father was born in Ohio; their daughters Margaret, 4, and Mary A., 1. The girls were both born in Utah. Their parents could read and write. [2]

Margaret Willie married Robert Smith on 3 October 1896 in Mendon, Cache, Utah. [3]

In 1900, the Smith family lived on a rented farm in Mendon, Cache County, Utah. The household included Robert Smith, 34, born in July 1866 in Scotland (parents b. Scotland), a farmer, who had immigrated in 1891; his wife of four years, Margaret, 24, born in Feb. 1876 in Utah (parents b. Utah), their children, both born in Utah, Marion, 3, b. July 1897; and Robert, 1, b. April 1899. [4]

In 1910, the Smith family lived in Mendon, Cache, Utah. All members of the family were born in Utah. The household included Margaret E. Smith, 34, a widow, whose parents were born in Utah, who had had five children (all living), engaged in farming (as an employer); her five children, whose father was born in Scotland: Marion, 12; Robert, 11; Ada, 9; John C., 7; and Norma, 4. In 1920, they lived in Oneida, Idaho. The family included Margaret E. Smith, 44, a widow, engaged in farming (employer); and her five children. [6]

Margaret Ella was known to her family and friends as Ell. Her father, William Pettit Willie was a Mormon and had two wives. Ell had at least ten siblings and at least five half-siblings. Ell married Robert Smith, in Utah. They had at least five children, all born in Utah. Ell died in 1937 and is buried with her husband in Holbrook Cemetery, Holbrook, Oneida, Idaho. [7]

Margaret Ella Smith was born 4 February 1884 in Mendon, Utah, the daughter of William Willie (b. Scotland) and Mary Ann Hunsker (b. Jordan, Utah). She died in Dee Hospital, Ogden, Utah, on 24 February 1937 after an operation on 2 February 1937 to remove stones from her bile duct. She also suffered from chronic hepatitis of the liver. Margaret was the widow of Robert Smith. She was a resident of Malad, Idaho. J.W. Carlson, of Ogden, Utah, was the informant to her death. Marion was buried at Malad, Idaho. [8]

The 1880 Census shows William Pettit Smith, his Wife Mary Ann (Hunsaker), Margaret Ella (4) and Mary Ada (1) , Not included is Elizabeth H who died in 1878. Both Girls were born in Mendon, Cache, Utah.

Robert Smith Jr was a horse groomsman, but took up Farming when he came to America. In abt 1905 Homesteading opened up in Holbrook, Oneida, Idaho and Robert and Ell followed her father to homestead there. Robert and Ell had 5 children, Marion Valoye born 1897, Robert III born 1899, Ada born 1901, John Claude born 1903 and Norma born 1905. In 1920 the family lived in Buist, Oneida, Idaho, but Robert Jr had died in a farming accident with a horse. Robert was buried in Holbrook, Oneida, Idaho, the nearest cemetery to their Homestead.

William Willie was born in Salt Lake, Salt Lake, Utah. Mary Ann Hunsaker born in West Jordan, Salt Lake, Utah. In her later years, Ell lived with her Daughter Marion Valoye and Marion's second husband Chester Bolingbroke. Ell's youngest Daughter Norma inherited the family farm. for a short time, Elle lived with Robert III and his wife Ruth, and then moved to be with Marion. Marion was buried in Malad, but we are talking about her Mother Ell who died in Ogden on 24 Feb 1937 and is buried in Holbrook next to her husband. (Notes and photos courtesy of a descendant.
