Biography

John was born in 1844, the son of James Gray and Mary (Curl) Williford, in North Carolina where he was raised.

Shortly after the Civil War broke out, John volunteered to fight for the Confederate State of North Carolina signing up at 18 years old with the 2nd Infantry Regiment. Out of over 1,300 men in North Carolina's 2nd Infantry Regiment only 54 officers and soldiers surrendered at the end of the Civil War. It is almost a certainty that John Williford lost his life in the war as the 2nd Infantry fought in the following battles: Seven Days' Battles, Cold Harbor, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and more.

No death or burial records have been found, as well as any other sort of record for John T. Williford dated after the war.
