Biography

Hartwell Williford was a son of John Williford of Edgecombe County, born on December 14, 1789..

Hartwell married his first wife, Martha Proctor, about 1811. She was born in 1794, the daughter of Aaron Proctor and Anna Williams Proctor. Together, Hartwell and Martha would have the following children:

Martha would pass away in 1847.

On November 4, 1848, Hartwell married his second wife, Elizabeth (Taylor) Sharpe. She was the daughter of Stephen Taylor and wife Nancy Curle, bonded by James G. Williford. She was born on March 15, 1813, and died December 7, 1888. On June 24, 1835 she had married Abraham T. Sharpe, bonded by Thomas Sharpe. Abraham passed away in 1847. Hartwell and Elizabeth had three children as follows:

It is said that Hartwell Williford owned a great deal of land and slaves at the beginning of the Civil War. The Census of 1860 for Wilson County, Joyner's Post Office, valued his estate at $8,150.00 which was a considerable sum for that time and area.

Family tradition states that Hartwell Williford possessed a ready temper and a powerful physique in his youth.

Hartwell passed away when 85 years of age in 1875.
