Turner apparently had a heart attack while working in his tobacco field. He crawled or walked to his nearest neighbor who lived about a half mile away. He was taken to the hospital in Pinehurst, NC and died a few days later.

Conversation with my father Louis Jesse Williford.
Turner had a 2 acre tobacco allotment on his 22 acre farm. His house was was about 200 sq ft with no water and no indoor plumbing. As a teenager I often helped him with his tobacco crop. My dad and Aunt Hilda Parker inherited the land when Turner died. Louis bought Hilda's share. Fortunately my family farmed the tobacco so I could go to college. My younger brother (Harold) and sister Joyce were smart and athletic enough that the tobacco money was no longer required. It was never farmed after the summer of 1963. We kids sold the farmland in 2017.
