Biography

Anna, or Maria as she preferred, was born in 1849, the daughter of Uriah and Jane (Bartlett) Williford, in Montgomery County, Illinois, where she was raised. Her father died in 1850 and in 1859 her mother married a second husband named Thompson.

On November 2, 1876, Maria married Thomas Eugene Watkins, the son of William Daniel and Susannah Eliza (Maxey) Watkins in Montgomery County, Illinois. They initially settled in Illinois but shortly after the birth of their oldest child Maria and Thomas relocated to the St. Louis, Missouri, area. They would have four children as follows:

Harmon Eugene Watkins (1878–1958)

Walter Watkins (1880–1941)

Edgar Watkins (1885–1939)

Winnie May Watkins (1890–1967)

Thomas is called a laborer or a day laborer in the US Census. Maria and Thomas took in her younger half-sister, Ella Thompson, who lived with them for many years. He lived to be 79 years old, passing away in 1929. Maria lived until 1934 when she died at 84 years of age. Their bodies are buried in the Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis County, Missouri, along with their daughter, May, and Maria's half-sister, Ella.
