Gordon was born in 1920. He was the son of Holman Willis and Bess Brower.[1][2] He was a graduate in the Class of 1943, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland.[3] He served in the Pacific theatre of war before becoming a Navy pilot and serving on the USS Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier.[4]
He married Julia Elizabeth Peterson, daughter of Eugene Harold Peterson and Adline Ullman, on 2 September 1944 at Roanoke, Virginia.[5] Julia was granted a divorce from Gordon on the grounds of desertion on 13 June 1967.[6]
Gordon married Jean Hall, daughter of Samuel Meredith Hudson and Ruth Hurst, on 22 June 1967 at Roanoke, Virginia.[7]
