Harriet (Willis) Yates is a part of US Black heritage.
Harriet Willis was born about 1838 in Virginia.
According to a family history written by her sons, she was an enslaved person at a plantation close to John "Jack" Yates'; they had about a dozen children together. About 1863, she was moved to her slave owner's new home in Matagorda County, Texas, and Jack was able to go with her and the family. [1]
