Biography

William Willis was born before 1674, in Hanover Parish, Richmond county, Virginia, a son of John Willis, who died July 6, 1715, in Hanover Parish, and his first wife. [1] Note: Some sources site the name of this John's 1st wife was Sarah, and their children as John Jr and William. It is believed that Matilda is the mother of Charles.

William married Sarah Rozier, a daughter of David Rozier and Sarah Sherwood of Sittingbourne Parish, Richmond County, Virginia. William died December 5, 1716, in St Mary's Parish, Richmond county, Virginia. After William's death, Sarah married 1) Henry Wood and 2) Rush Hudson [2]

[3] Richmond County Court 5th of December 1716 "WILLIS's Estate SARAH WILLIS, Relict of WILLIAM WILLIS, deced. came into Court and made Oath that WILLIAM WILLIS departed this life without makeing any Will sue farr as she knows or believes, and on her Petition, and giveing security for her just and faithfull administration of the Decedent's Estate, Certificate is granted her for obtaining Letters of Administration in due form"

[4] KNOW ALL MEN by these p:sents that we SARAH WILLIS, JOHN WILLIS and CHARLES WILLIS of County of Richmond are held and firmly bound unto the Worspll. his Maties Justices of the peace for sd: County in the full & just sume of One hundred pounds Sterling, to the which payment well and truely to be made we bind ourselves our heirs firmly by these p:sents; Sealed with our Seales and Dated the 5th day of Decembr. 1716 THE CONDITION of this Obligation is such that if the above bound SARAH WILLIS, Admrx. of all the goods chattells & creditts of WM: WILLIS deced., do make a true & perfect Inventory of all the goods chattells & creditts of the sd: deced., and the same so made do exhibit into the County Court of Richmond att such time as she shall be thereto required by sd: Court and the same goods chattells & creditts shall well and truely administer according to Law, And further do make a just and true account of her actings and doings therein when thereto required by sd: Court, and shall well and truely deliver and pay unto such persons respectively as the Justices shall direct by their Order or Judgment pursuant. to the Laws in such case made and provided; And if it shall hereafter appear that an Last Will and Testment was made by the sd: deced. and the Ezr. or Exrs. therein named do exhibit the wine in the sd. Court making request to have it allowd & approved accordingly if the sd: SARAH WILLIS being thereunto required do render and deliver up her Letters of Admon: approbation of such Testamt. being first had and made in sd: Court, Then this Obligation to be void and of none effect, otherwise to remaine in full force and virtue Signed Sealed and Delivered in the p:sence of (no witnesses recorded) SARAH sign WILLIS JOHN WILLIS Acknowledged in Richmond County Court the CHARLES signe WILLIS Fifth day of December 1716 by SARAH WILLIS, JOHN WILLIS and CHARLES WILLIS and ordered to be recorded Test M. [5] William WILLIS of of County of Richmond of the Pish. Of St. Marys, Planter, to John HOKFORD of the aforesaid County & Pish…. Land lying in ye County of Richmond and Pish: of St. Marys on the North side of the River which is called Rappahanock River … Francis THORNTON… Francis WRIGHTS and John WRIGHTS… twelve acres… part of a Patten of land granted to John WILLIS Senior by sd William BARKLEY for 201 acres bearing date 21 Oct 1669… and William WILLIS and Sarah WILLIS his now Wife … this (blank) day of September 1709.

Will: WILLIS. Sarah [her marke + ] WILLIS. In presence of: Isaac ARNOLD, John WILLIS. At Richmond County Court on 7 Sep 1709, John COOMBS Attorney of William WILLIS came this day into Court and acknowledged the within Deed. Also the said COOMBS by vertue of a letter of Attorney from Sarah WILLIS, the wife of sd. William WILLIS, to him in that behalf made relinquished her the said Sarah's right of Dower… unto the said HAUKFORD

Illegitimate Child of indentured servant

[6] His child Mary born out of wedlock. [7]. Catherine Cullins, servant to Wm Willis as ordered to serve her master eight months past her stated indenture for having a child out of wedlock. (Mary Cullins). William appeared and confest judgment to the Church Wardens of St. Maryes Parish for the use of said parish five hundred pound of tobacco in caske, the same being the find of Catherine Cullins.

Willis-699 and Willis-4882 appear to represent the same person because: All three seem to be the same guy. The death dates diverge, but perhaps an eponymous father's death date has gotten confused?
