Biography

Ann Willis was baptised on 22nd June 1800 in the parish of Killesher, county Fermanagh.

Ann and her brother George Willis were orphaned at a very young age and brought up by their uncle, George Willis who at the time, was living with his own father, Captain George Willis in Gortnakelly.

Ann Willis married Richard Stanton Cleary in Swanlinbar, he was a friend of her uncle Captain George Willis and was a brother of Mary Cleary, Captain George Willis’s first wife. According to Dick Rogers “It is said he was engaged to Lady Mary Cole, a daughter of Lord Enniskillen, but eloped with Anne Willis the night before the wedding. He was a Lieutenant in the 76th Regiment and was French Canadian on his mother’s side.” [1]

Richard Cleary and Ann Willis had two sons and a daughter -

Their daughter, Anne Cleary married M.Blondeau. G.A.A.Willis says that Anna’s husband was chosen for her by her parents who shut her in her room until she consented to marry him. Anne and M.Blondeau had a daughter, Anne Blondeau who married William Laird (d: 12.7.1912) and is buried with him in Mt.Jerome Cemetery, Dublin. Anne Blondeau was a well-known figure around Dublin, known as “Madame Laird” she died 4.8.1933 age 92.

Their son Richard Cleary was minister of St.Helier, Jersey from 1872; then became Vicar of Banningham, Norfolk. Richard Cleary died in Cannes in 1907.
