Biography

Mary Ann Willis Adkins was born in September, 1823. She was a daughter of James Willis and Sarah Plumley. She married as Parker Adkins' second wife on March 5, 1851 in Raleigh County, West Virginia. She was sixty years younger than her husband. I have been able to identify two children from this marriage; Elizabeth and Sarah Anne. Mary Ann became a widow about six years later.

Mary Anne was eligible for a widow's pension due to her husband's service in the War of 1812. Her pension application file is very large due to one of her lawyers was investigated and charged with fraud.

Mary Ann was living with her daughter and son-in-law Sarah Anne and Sylvester Plumley when she died on January 14, 1887. Sarah said that her mother had been ill when members of the family contracted measles and she showed symptoms of measles and died, so she thought, of the combined effects of both.

Ok, I deleted my previous comment because on page 90 of Parker Adkin's pension file, right after a transcription of Parker's marriage bond is a transcription titled "Certificate of Father of the Wife" and states "I hereby certify that Mary Willis the daughter of Sally Willis is over the age of twenty one years at this time to the best of my knowledge and belief given under my hand this 9th day of Janury 1851" it was signed by a mark of Matthies Willis.

I do not believe that it is a certificate of Mary's father but rather her brother Mathias. The wording indicates that because it states that Mary is a daughter of Sally Willis and if Matthies was truly her father it would be worded "my daughter" and not "the daughter of Sally Willis". It was common for another close relative to sign the document if the father had already passed which would also mean that Mary's father would have died "Before 9 Jan 1851". It also gives a nickname of "Sally" to Mary's mother.
