Biography

Joseph Stratton Willis, son of William Wesley Willis and Gabrilla Stratton, was born at 1:55am on Monday March 2, 1885 at Snowflake, Apache, Arizona. He was blessed on 7 May 1885 by Bishop John Hunt. Of the 14 children born to his parents, he was one of seven to survive, and the only son.

Joseph was baptized in Snowflake, Arizona on 1 June 1893 by his father William Wesley Willis. On the same day he was confirmed by President J. N. Smith. Joseph was ordained a deacon by his father William Wesley Willis on 30 October 1899.

Joseph worked with his father on their farm and molasses mill. They also made adobe bricks for most of the buildings in Snowflake. He also hauled freight from Holbrook to Fort Apache to provide supplies to the Army Camps stationed there. This was done by wagon with teams of up to 8 horses.

In preparation for his marriage to Wilmirth East Flake he was ordained an Elder by William Jordan Flake, first counselor to Bishop Hunt on September 13, 1905. They traveled to Salt Lake City to be married on October 5, 1905 by John R. Winder, 1st Counselor to President Joseph F. Smith.

Joseph Stratton Willis passed away on Tuesday April 27, 1965 at the home of his daughter Martha in Snowflake. His funeral and burial were in Snowflake on 1 May 1965
