William was born about 1778.
It is believed that he was from NY (Sing Sing now called Ossining area). This is family lore and I have not been able to prove location of birth or death. Many Willis' went to Ohio and Connecticut also. Not sure of his ancestors. Hope someone out there has the key. Maybe Massachusetts, New York?, but have not been able to connect to any families as of yet.
I believe William's ancestors may come from Henry Willis Willis-159 who settled in NY. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Willis-5651. The Long Island Genealogy link lists Edmond Willis as having been married in1778 and having a son William who married an Ann. If someone has DNA that is linked to this Line, please let me know so I can prove or disprove. Not all of his (Henry) children list their spouses and children.

Believe this is his 1810 US Census for New York Ward 3. It shows 3 people total, which would include him, his wife and son. - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH29-2NS
