Mary Willis was born about 1808 in Brandesburton a large village in North Holderness, ten miles northeast of Cottingham. (see census 1861).
In 1861 Robert and Mary Grantham were probably finding life fairly easy on Northgate Cottingham. Robert at 50 was still young enough to be vigorous, and sons Thomas and Peter were both working as Ag.Labs and bringing in money to the family. Adding in the produce from a well-tended garden and their life was probably as comfortable as working men's lives got in those years. Of course there was still the struggle to keep in work, and to put a bit by for old age or illness: there was no unemployment benefit, pension or National Health Service. [1]
