Biography

John Walpole Willis was born on 4 January 1793 in Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales, the second son of Mary Willis and William Willis.^[1][2][3]

He was a barrister and later a judge.^[2]

He married firstly to Mary Isabella Bowes-Lyon on 8 August 1824.^[2] Their son was:

• Robert Bruce Willis (1826–1897)

John and Mary's marriage was dissolved by Act of parliament in 1833.^[2]

He married Ann Susanna Kent Bund on 15 September 1836 at St John Parish, Bedwardine, Worcester.^[2][4] They had one son and two daughters:^[2]

• John William Bund Willis (1844?–?)
• Mary Jane Bund Willis (1847?–?)
• Catherine Smith Bund Willis (1848–?)

John died on 10 September 1877 in England.^[2]

Research notes

According to an article in Melbourne's Table Talk in 1894, Lord Chief Justice Willis was the uncle of Ambrose Jennings Sheppard.^[5] No further sources have been uncovered to date to substantiate this claim.
