Stella Marie Willoughby was born June 26, 1896, in Sintaluta, Saskatchewan, daughter of James Willoughby, and Sarah Jane Morton. ^{[1] [2]}An alternate birthdate of June 16, 1896 was sometimes recorded for Stella.

Stella married William Smith on August 14, 1918 in Sintaluta.

Stella and Will raised five children during their marriage after loosing infant triplets on their farmstead.
