Thomas Henry Willoughby was born in Cornwall, England in 1840, the son of Thomas Willoughby and Christina Pascoe.

In 1841 he was age 1 and living with his parents and brother James in Illogan, Cornwall.

In 1851 he was age 11 and living with his parents and six siblings in Illogan, Cornwall. His occupation was listed as mine boy.

He moved to the United States and his family settled in Carroll County, GA, where they were living at the time of the 1860 census. He found love twice: first with Amanda Kennedy, whom he married in 1861 and with whom he had at least two children ( Thomas Jefferson Willoughby and Mary Ann Lucy Polly Willoughby), and then Elizabeth "Betsy" Kennedy, with whom he had Monroe Talley, Lonzo Talley, Mandy Odessa and Charles Willoughby.

According to the 1860 census, his siblings were: William, bc 1842, John, bc 1844; Oliver, bc 1846; Louisa, bc 1847; Charles, bc 1849; Lizzie, bc 1851; Emeline, bc 1852 and baby Joseph, newly born in GA during the census year of 1860. According to the Coaly Orchard genealogy, there was a sister, Lydia Ann, born in England c 1853. It is unknown why Lydia was not on the 1860 census, although she could be Emeline. She does appear in the 1880 census in Cass County, TX

It is unknown if he served in the American military during the War Between the States after he moved to the US.

Source (not linkable) www.gro.gov.uk gives Tom's middle name as Henry (probably his father's middle name too). The "Pascoe" is his mother's maiden name, not part of his name.
