Margaret (Wills) Milgate migrated from Scotland to United States.
Margaret Wills was born on 26 Mar 1863 in Glassary, Argyll, Scotland to Thomas Wills and Janet Thomson.[1] [2]
Not sure why, but Margaret seemed to think that she was from Dundee, Scotland but there are no records on Scotland's People for a Margaret Wills from Dundee. Her death record lists her parents last names as Wills and Thompson and the only record on Scotland's People for a Margaret Wills with a mother's maiden name of Thompson is for Margaret Wills born in Argyll.
She lived with her parents in Lochgilphead, Argyll when she was young, working as a house servant when she was old enough.[3] [4] [5] [6]
Margaret left Scotland for the United States sometime between 1851 and 1855. By 1855, she was boarding with a family in Johnstown, Fulton, New York.[7] She was working as a stitcher, probably for one of the many glove-making companies in Johnstown.
Margaret married Stephen Milgate on 6 Aug 1858 in Gloversville, Fulton, New York. (See her obituary. Could not find the marriage date anywhere else at this time.) They had three children:
- Annie Louise Milgate (1862-1952)
- Hattie E. Milgate (1867-1949)
- Elizabeth C. Milgate (1869-1939)
Margaret and Stephen settled in Johnstown.[8]
Her husband was away fighting in the Civil War but on his return, they continued living in Johnstown until 1870.[9] [10] In 1875, they were living in nearby Gloversville.[11]
But by 1880, they had left for Nebraska to homestead. They settled in Cameron, Hall, Nebraska.[12]
Unfortunately, her husband died in 1896.
Margaret then went to live with her daughter Hattie in Pine Bluffs, Laramie, Wyoming where she lived for the rest of her life.[13] [14] [15]
Margaret Milgate died on 20 Jan 1926 in Pine Bluffs from "generall debility".[2] [16] She was buried in the Wood River cemetery in Wood River, Nebraska.[17] She was 89 years old.
Her obituary was published in the newspaper:Margaret Will was born in Dundee, Scotland, March 26, 1836. She came to America at the age of 15 years, making her home in New York. ... On August 6, 1858 she was united in marriage with Stephen Milgate, at Gloversville, N.Y. In 1878 she came with her husband and family to Nebraska, locating near Wood River. ... She passed away January 20, 1926, at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 24 days. Funeral services were held in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, January 21 after which the remains were brought to Wood River for burial.[18]
