James Alfred Wilson parents were John Wilson Jr. and Isabella Merritt who were living in 1830 North Central Anderson County, South Carolina. He married Elizabeth (Whitten) Wilson II (1805-1880) on 29 December 1825 in Anderson County, South Carolina, USA. They had at least 5 children: [3][4]

James A. Wilson received several land grants in Fayette Co. Alabama totaling 1520 acres in 1864. He owned 12 slaves and raised cattle in addition to agricultural pursuits. He had left South Carolina about 1835, with his family intending to settle in Mississippi, but the Indian Wars caused them to stop in Fayette County, Alabama, USA.[5]
