Biography

Birth, Marriage, and Death January 5, 1913, Brookstown Ave, the town of Salem in North Carolina. The average temperature for January that year was 29. It was the eve of Old Christmas. It was cold. It was Sunday. "Sunday's child is full of grace", as the old rhyme goes. Howard Kenneth Wilson was born that day. Howard's father, Henry, worked just steps away from home at the boxing department of a tobacco company. Later that year Winston and Salem would incorporate into one town. That same year 4th street was paved and horses were purchased for the fire department. Salem was a working class neighborhood. Fast forward to 2017. The building which housed Arista Mill is now Brookstown Inn. No.5 Brookstown Avenue where Howard was born is now the address of the Children's Museum. During Howard's childhood the family also lived at 220 Goldfloss St, and 625 East Fifth St.

Howard Kenneth Wilson was born on Brookstown Avenue in Salem, North Carolina on January 5, 1913. His father Wilson-32435 worked in the boxing department of a tobacco factory which was close by. When Howard's descendants drive thru Old Salem trying to soak up the atmosphere it is important to remember that during Howard's childhood it was nothing like the way it is now. Then it was a working class neighborhood, and many years before the restoration project of the late 11960s.

In 1920 Howard was six years old and living with his parents on East Fifth Street, Ward 2, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Along with his parents and brothers there were some boarders in the house. Their names were: Henry Cline (uncle), Dillard Chilis, 19; Grady Boyd, 21; Eller Black, 19; and Lucy Black, 20 years old. Henry Cline was a brother of Howard's mother, Nannie. We don't know who the other young people were, but most likely they were workers in one of the nearby factories. It was not unusual for homeowners to rent out rooms to people who had moved to town for work.

The family dynamics, and happiness, changed suddenly and drastically when Nannie died on 1 January 1926 of Puerpural fever after giving birth. The baby died also. Nannie left four motherless little boys and in less than a month Henry remarried.

Information taken from US Federal Census and also marriage records:
Howard is listed as a boarder in two different households in 1930.
On April 8 1930 Howard is unemployed and living in the household of his uncle William Guthrie Cline in Broadbay Township of Forsyth County, North Carolina. [1]
On 18 April 1930 Howard was working as a delivery boy for a drug store and is listed as a boarder in the home of Lewis Lackey in the West Second Ward of Winston-Salem City. [2]
In 1931 Howard and Mildred were married in Carroll County, Virginia.
In 1934 Howard and Mildred were living at 204 West Academy St., Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Howard was working as a dyer. [3]
In 1940 Howard and Mildred were boarders in the home of their friends Ralph and Vivian Hilson, and children, who lived in Edgewater Borough, Bergen, New Jersey, United States.

[4]

Children of Howard and Mildred will be interested to know that Ralph Hilson had been born in Minnesota, and Vivian was born in Pennsylvania, according to this census record.
