Biography

Mary Louisa "Lou" Wilson was born on January 24, 1863 to Jefferson and Sarah (Arnold) Wilson. The Wilson family was living in Scott County, Virginia and lived there until a move was made to Arkansas between 1874 and 1880.

Lou married Al Growl or Grawl in 1881. They settled in Franklin County, Kansas and they had a daughter that was named Effie. Lou Wilson told the following story in The Jefferson N. Wilson History, Lost Links and Tangled Threads Unravelled, 1981 by Ruth Holt Patten this manuscript has not been published: While married to Al Growl, her mother, Sarah, died. By 1887 Jefferson N. Wilson was living with a son at the Osawatomie, Kansas area. When Lue left Al Growl, she walked with a 5 year old child to where her father was living. The marriage between Mary Louisa Taylor and Al Growl lasted from 1881-1888.

Lou married Thomas Alfred Taylor on February 19, 1888 in Washington County, Arkansas.

They remained in Washington County, Arkansas until after the birth of their daughter, Fannie in 1893. Between 1893 and 1898, they had relocated to Indian Territory which would later become Oklahoma.

Lou remained in Shawnee following the death of Thomas in 1927. She later married Thomas M. Dee on February 5, 1942 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Lou passed away on July 16, 1947 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She is buried in the Tecumseh Cemetery located in Tecumseh, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. Find A Grave Memorial# 98964602

Research Notes

I found an individual listed in the Kansas State Census of 1885 for Franklin County as A.J. Grauel. He was born in 1862 in Indiania. Further research shows he remained in Franklin County, Kansas per the 1920 US Census showing A.J. Grauel. However, when i checked out the Find A Grave site, I found Andrew Jackson Grauel.

Could this possibly be the father of Lou's daughter Effie? When talking to my grandmother, she remembered the name Growl (sounds like, not necessarily correct spelling) and thought the first name was something like Al. I'm wondering if what she was remembering was AJ. I checked out the 1885 Census for other Grauel, Growl, Grawl etc and there was only the one listing for a Grauel familyl AJ's mother, Marthia was listed as widowed and he and his sister E.M. were listed as single.

This is the first possibility I have ever found for Lou's first marriage and Effie's father.
