Nellie's parents were from the country (Phoebe was born in Parkes in 1890, Phoebe and Robert were married in Narrabri when she was 18).
Nellie was born in 1913[1], a year younger than her brother Albert.
By 1915, they were all living in Balmain, and Robert was a boilermaker. They lived there until Nellie was 4 or 5[2], but then left.
We don't know what happened then, but in 1925, when Nellie was 12, Robert is living at 7 Beaumont St Hamilton with an Edith Wilson (mother? sister? second wife?). In 1933 when Nellie is 20 she has a child (my mum) with a man from the eastern suburbs of Sydney, and she has an address in Darlinghurst but also gives the same address as Robert in Hamilton[3].
Cut to the 1940s, and three working men (labourer, wireworker, shop assistant) are on the electoral roll at the Hamilton place. If their appearance on the roll coincides with their 21st birthdays, it's likely that Robert left Phoebe after 1916, married Edith by 1920, and had three more children with her. Nellie was caught between her mother and father. Didn't marry Leah's father, didn't go back to live with her father...
Birth certificate copy obtained by Leah Francis says "Male". This is probably a typo
