Biography

Sarah (Wilson) Weatherall was born in Whitby to an English immigrant family in 1836.

In the first Canadian census in 1851 she was only 14 years old, living with her brother Thomas 16, working at a harness maker's shop. Her mother Hannah was nearby working as a farm labourer with the three youngest children. Her mother was recorded as widowed, he is reported to have died that year, likely the reason for the scattering of the family.

In 1861 she was 23 and living with her husband William Weatherall and her son James 3 and daughter Mary 1. Also in the home was John Wilson aged 30 and his wife Eliza with three small children Timothy 5, William 3 and Eliza 1.

It is unknown the relationship between Sarah and John Wilson, it would be safe to assume they were siblings or cousins, but there were several Wilson families in the same census from various origins including Loyalists from the US, in addition to the various countries of the UK.

She is mentioned in the County of Kent record on page 410 where her father is noted as an English immigrant who settled in Whitby with a group of colonists under Colonel Tincombe in 1830.

By 1871 the family moved to Nottawasaga township in Simcoe county where she is recorded with her husband, son James and four daughters. Her daughters were named Mary Hannah, after her sister and mother, Sarah Jane, and Margaret and Frances both named after Sarah's sisters.

In 1874 her youngest daughter, Hannah Amelia (Annie) was born.

She is named in her daughter Sarah Jane's wedding certificate along with her husband and son-in-law Edward John Rowbotham.
