June 2017 Due to some more people and records having been removed from my tree on ancestry, I am now re-considering the possibility that Mary Ann Dance may not be her biological mother and that we must be open to new possibilities. Only DNA results will help to clarify or confirm. The names that were removed from my files lead me to more questions, and the fact that the files are redacted or changed when I try to look at them again. I have most of them downloaded and saved... but this opens a whole new outlook. So, if you are a descendent of Viola and take a dna test, be sure to join up with us. If you get any Reevely Freeley Dance Dance or Einboden matches give a shout out! Or any Snyders. We should be getting Keller and Young matches too.
Viola's parents were James Albert Einboden and Mary Ann Dance, they changed their names to Wilson after it was said in our line of family; that James purchased a tailor shop from a Wilson and rather than change the shop name, he choose to change the family name.
Another line of the family claims he changed their names due to what he had explained as anti-german sentiments. This is doubtful as the family was well established in Detroit, MI, USA prior to WWI.
For certain, James Albert and Mary Ann were using the moniker "Wilson." They passed that name onto their daughters, Viola for certain.
In recent years, it has been discovered that James and Mary Ann had other possibilities for their name changing. See her parents for more on this.
My grandfather Earl H Bale, Viola's eldest, did not have any recollection of his grandfathers original last name. He was beginning to search it out near the end of his life.
It was not until after Earl's death that his family was made aware of the Einboden name, thanks to a call from Montana. Nancy Joe Turner called to say she was compiling a book on the Einboden family and she would like to include Alberts family. We did not know who Albert was. She explained to me that he was Viola's father. She was surprised that we did not know anything about the Einboden name or family.
Nancy Joe Einboden Turner compiled a book that holds many photographs of documents and people, and "Ancestry" records support what she compiled, by hand, in travels and collecting from the family members who still had maintained relationships and contact.
We owe Nancy Jo our gratitude for helping us reconnect with our family line.
The family story was that neighbors took Viola in when she was a baby, but the 1900 census proves this inaccurate. It notes however, Viola as being 5. Her parents claim to have arrived in the states in 1890 and to have been married 13 years. Her father is working as a tailor.
We do have strong reason to believe that Viola was born in the US due to her being found on a Michigan birth and Christening index with her parents being James A Wilson and Mary A Wilson.
A Detroit, MI newspaper article regarding Viola's father filing a law suit due to her falling and being injured demonstrates that her father was in her young life. However, it does state "guardian of Viola Wilson" which leaves questions open to her paternity.
In June 1905 there is a divorce filed by Viola's mother, MaryWilson against James Wilson, it is also noted in the Detroit Free Press. The divorce is granted based on cruelty and abandonment. There is not anything noted about children shown in the online record nor mention of Viola's custody, but it does state in the paper that Mary has custody of the children.
Viola was twelve when her mother died at the young age of 35. There is a border crossing noted for Viola's Uncle Richard Dance, who most likely took care of her her mother's burial. Mary Ann is buried on the southeast side of Detroit, alone, under the abscurity of "Wilson. "
In April of 1913, Viola's father was arrested for a knife attack during a drunken gathering in his shop. One of his daughter's father in law, Henry Crooks was involved in the incident as his friend, a witness.
Viola had two sisters.
A census record in 1910 shows Viola boarding with a young couple by the name of Clayton. Viola is aged 16 and working as a telephone operator.
There is a 1910 census record for Viola's father James and he is living alone.
In the 1920 census, Viola is married, living with her husband and in in-laws. She has 3 sons.
In 1925, Viola was 30 years old, her father died after a 18 month stay at Eloise State Hospital. He died of stomach cancer. Avoiding the burial rituals of many Eloise patients, James A Wilson is claimed and buried in the City of Royal Oak Cemetery, Michigan, USA.
There is a clue that James Albert Wilson reconnected with his bother Peter (who was married to Mary Ann Dance aka; Wilson) There is a photo of Viola and Peter's children, together. This event took place when James and Viola returned to Canada, after she had married.
2/16/18 Picked up her death record at court house, list's her parents as "unavailable Wilson" and "Mary Unavailable." The informant is her son Dan. J Bale Sr. There is a Helen Wilson with the same birth date and possibly a Mae Wilson with this same birthdate. Also found a border crossing for a Viola Wilson, widowed, aged 35, where she claims she isn't going to stay in the states. Our Viola was married and had numerous children at the time, so not certain it was her, however, the birth dates appear to match.

So the 2017 comment in the biography as to whether Viola Elizabeth's mother was Mary Ann Dance is redundant, since 2 of my Dancey cousins (who share my Dancey 3rd great grandfather), share DNA with a Bale descendant.
