Sam and his father James had purchased 200 acres of land between Collinson and Breeze Roads where they milked 60 cows. Milk was delivered to the factory at Ryal Bush in ten gallon cans on a spring dray. This farm was later transferred to Sam who sold it a year or two later. Home from 1925 to 1946 was on a farm of about 40 acres in Findlay Road, to be followed by a move to the corner of Racecourse Road and Herbert Street, Invercargill. There was an acre of land, the corner section was used for their new home and the remaining sections were used for a large vegetable garden. While the family lived in Layard Street Sam worked for the Express Company collecting cream from the station to take to the Waitaki Dairy Factory in Clyde Street. He had a flat deck dray and a horse which he stabled at the back of the property. Francis, aged 7 years, used to have a ride on the dray to the Elles Road and Layard Street corner. One day he climbed off the front of the dray and the horse stepped back on him, crushing his chest which resulted in his death. Sam owned “Navy Cut” a thoroughbred racehorse which was a very good horse. He also owned a trotter called “Lustrous Gold” which he stabled on the Boxall Road farm of his son Bill, but this horse was never raced. SUSAN AND SAMUEL WILSON (memories from Margaret [Morrison (Wilson)]) When my Mother and Father met ... My Father was a farm hand. At Christmas time a big tent was put up on the lawn for the children and grandchildren to play in. On Show Day Dad would bring home ice-cream. It was nicer than the ice-cream of today. A trip to Oreti Beach was a highlight. The family all made their own fun and were well looked after. Dad had a tar drum which he would light and we breathed in the fumes and with the heat would counteract any epidemic or flu bug. He also poured tar around the farm boundary as a precaution. SAMUEL WILSON: (memory from Harold [Wilson?]) Grandfather got his finger caught in the turnip chopper and had a sore stiff finger for the rest of his life.

Ancestry.com. 1881 Scotland Census [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007. Original data: Scotland. 1881 Scotland Census. Reels 1-338. General Register Office for Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland. Note: The 1881 Census for Scotland was taken on the night of 3/4 April 1881. The following information was requested: •Place (name of street, place, or road, and name or number of house) •Name of each person that had spent the night in that household •Relation to head of family •Marital Status •Age •Sex (indicated by which column the age is recorded in) •Profession or occupation •Birthplace •Whether deaf and dumb, blind, imbecile or idiot, or lunatic Enumeration forms were distributed to all households before the census night and the complete forms were collected the next day by the enumerators. All responses were to reflect the individual's status as of 3/4 April 1881 for all individuals who had spent the night in the house. People who were traveling or living abroad were enumerated at the location where they spent the night on census night. All of the details from the individual forms were copied into enumerators’ books and sent to the Registrar General’s office in London. These copies are the records we can view images of today. The original householder's schedules were destroyed. The clerks who compiled and reviewed the census data made a variety of marks on the returns. Unfortunately, many of these tally marks were written over personal information and some fields, such as ages, can be difficult to read as a result. More useful marks include a single slash (/) between households (families) within a building and a double slash (//) separating households in separate buildings. How the census forms are organized: Localities were organized into enumeration districts. These districts were roughly equivalent to parishes, but not always. A description of the district and its boundaries is given at the beginning of each new enumeration district. The returns are generally organized by parish and enumeration district. Each parish has been assigned a “Parish Number”. This number was originally assigned in 1855 when civil registration began being kept. The numbers were assigned in a general north to south, and east to west direction by county. Within each county, numbers were assigned in alphabetical order by parish name. A full reference for a record in the 1881 census includes: the Parish Number, Enumeration District Number, Entry Number (Page Number), Parish Name, County Name, and the Census Year. Known problems with the 1881 Census: The following is a list of parishes (with their parish numbers and counties) that are known to be missing (either because there is no data for them, or because the original records are missing): Parish Number Parish Name County 124 Abernethy Moray 399 Abbotshall Fife 758 Broughton Peebles TID 434 ItemAuthor ItemTitle 1881 Scotland Census ItemType WebsiteTitle ancestry.com.au URL http://search.ancestry.com.au/search/db.aspx?dbid=1119 CreditLine General Register Office for Scotland
