Biography

Samuel was born about 1835.

He may have been the Samuel Hardin who was living in Clay & Richland county, Illinois in 1850.[1]

He married Mahala B. Hardin on 14 Aug 1856 in Washington county, Indiana.[2] The wedding was performed by S. Emmitt Barr. Samuel and Mahala had several children.

In 1860, they were living in Madison township, Washington, Indiana.[3]

Mahala passed away before the 1870 census. In 1870, he was living in Flinn, Lawrence county, Indiana with his children. A Catherine Wilson, age 65, was in the household (possibly his mother).[4]

He married Martha Parris on 21 Jul 1874 in Jackson county, Indiana.[5]

In 1880, he was listed in Bono, Lawrence, Indiana with Martha.[6] His age was listed as about ten years younger than estimated from the previous census records. However, it appears to be the same family group of children. His father's birthplace was listed as Pennsylvania and his mother's as Ohio.

He passed away after 1880.[7]

Research Questions

There are two possible Samuel Wilsons. A Samuel Wilson passed away in Williams, Lawrence, Indiana 16 Oct 1911. His birth date was listed as 14 Feb 1840. Parent as John Wilson. This would have made him age 16 at the time of his marriage to Mahala. There was no indication that he was underage from that marriage record.

That Samuel was in Lawrence, Indiana in 1900 and 1910, with wife Mattie (Martha) in the household.[8][9]

There was a Samuel Wilson who passed away in Acton, Marion, Indiana 30 Jun 1914, birthdate 29 Jun 1833. Parents listed as Alexander Wilson and Catherine Alison. This appears consistent with him on the census in 1850 and 1870 with an older Catherine Wilson in the household.

However, other than the age, the census records appear more consistent with the Samuel Wilson who passed away in 1911 in Lawrence, Indiana. There were children of Samuel and Mahala who married in that county. Hence he may have been the son of a John Wilson from Pennsylvania and a Catherine (unknown) from Ohio.
