Biography

Isabel Wilson was born on 18 January 1787 at Greenend, in Liberton parish, in the county of Midlothian, in Scotland and was baptised there on 28 January 1787 witnesses David Falcomer & David Crighton. [1] She was the daughter of John Wilson and Mary Watt.

Her birth date is not certain. The 1861 census indicates that she was born around 1787 in Cranston parish in Midlothian, [2] while her father is described as John Wilson, coal miner in her Statutory Death register entry. [3]

No marriage has been found for Isabella Wilson and George Hogg (born 04 August 1785) [4] in the Old Parish Registers of Banns & Marriages. According to her evidence given to the 1942 Franks Commission, which she is believed to have given around March 1841, she stated that she had been married 37 years. [5] Therefore, Isabella Wilson must have married George Hogg around 1804.

Isabella Wilson had at least eight children with George Hogg:

  1. John "the Jake" Hogg later Overseer of Penston colliery (born 27 May 1807) [6]
  2. Janet Hogg (born 15 January 1812) [7]
  3. Catherine Hogg (born ca. 1817)
  4. Marion Hogg (born 26 July 1819) [8]
  5. Helen Hogg (born 03 July 1822) [9]
  6. Andrew Hogg (born 13 May 1824) [10]
  7. Mary Hogg (born ca. 1826) &
  8. Agnes Hogg (born 08 September 1829). [11]

At the census of 06 June 1841, Isabella Wilson was recorded as Isabella Hogg, aged 50, living at Penston, Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland and born outside the county of East Lothian. Also in the household were Mary Hogg, aged 14 and Agnes Hogg aged 10, both born in East Lothian. [12]

At the census of 30 March 1851, Isabella Wilson was recorded as Easibella Hogg, aged 63, an Annuitant and living at Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland. [13]

At the census of 07 April 1861, Isabella Wilson was recorded as Isabella Wilson, aged 72, a widow and a pauper living at Macmerry, Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland. Her place of birth is given as "Edinburgh(shire), Cranston)". [2]

On 14 June 1861, Isabella Wilson died at Macmerry, Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland. She was described as 73 years old, a pauper and the widow of George Hogg, Coal Miner. Her father was described as John Wilson, Coal Miner, while the name of her mother was not recorded. The cause of death was Supposed hydrothoisy? Dropt down sudddenly. There was no medical attendant. Her death was registered on 04 July 1861 by her son-lin-law, James Smith, of Macmerry. [3]

Her husband George Hogg had died around 1833, some 28 years before her. [5]

Children's Employment Commission

We know a fair amount concerning Isabella Wilson as she was one of those who gave evidence to the 1842 Children's Employment Commission: [5]

"No.131 - Isabel Hogg, 53 years of age, was a coal-bearer:- [14]
Coal Bearers

Been married 37 years; it was the practice to marry early, when the coals were all carried on women's backs, men needed us; from the great sore labour false births are frequent and very dangerous. I have four daughters married and all work below till they bear their bairns - one is very badly now from working while pregnant, which brought on a miscarriage from which she is not expected to recover. Collier-people suffer much more than others - my guid man died nine years since with bad breath; he lingered some years and was entirely off work 11 years before he died.

You must just tell the Queen Victoria that we are guid loyal subjects; women-people here don't mind work but they object to horse-work and that she would have the blessings of all the Scotch coal-women if she would get them out of the pits and send them to other labour.

The Commissioned noted: Mrs. Hogg is one of the most respectable coal-wives in Penston, her rooms are all well furnished and the house the cleanest I have seen in East Lothian.

Research Notes

Confusion with the Birthdate and parents

The Isabella Wilson who married George Hogg has been confused in some old family trees with the Isabel Wilson who was born 17 October 1788 in Gladsmuir Kirk, in the parish of Gladsmuir in the county of East Lothian. [15]

However the latter Isabel Wlson was the daughter of John Wilson, who is variously described as "barley maker", "corn dealer" and "farmer" in the Old Parish Registers of Births & Baptisms. In Gladsmuir on 01 October 1807, she married Robert Carse, from Chirnside, a carter. [16] They had at least two children, Andrew Carse who was born 04 July 1811 in Tranent, [17] and Isabella Carse, who was born 25 September 1815 in South Leith. [18]

Birth source has been included in the biography that matches the parents connected to this profile, but there is still some differences with census. That birth source states she was born at Greenend, in Liberton parish, in the county of Midlothian, in Scotland.

The Isabella Wilson who married George Hogg was not born in East Lothian according to the 1841 census. [12] The 1851 census states that she was born in Gladsmuir in East Lothian, [13] while the 1861 census indicates that she was born in Cranston parish in Midlothian. [2] It is interesting to note that her eldest known son, John "the Jake" Hogg, was born nearby to Cranston parish in Pathhead in Crichton parish on 27 May 1807. [19] It was common for women to return to their mother's house to give birth to their first child. John "the Jake" Hogg went on to become overseer of Penston colliery and his son the Rev. Dr. John Hogg was a friend of, and performed the marriage of the Maharaja Duleep Singh in Cairo on 07 June 1864).

When Isabella Wilson died, her death was registered by her son-in-law, James Smith. He recorded Isabella's father as John Wilson, Coal Miner. However, he was not able to supply the name of Isabella's mother. James Smith was married to Isabella's daughter, Catherine. No record of Catherine's birth has been found, but the 1851 census states that she was born in Crichton parish in Midlothian while the 1861 census suggests she was born in Gladsmuir in East Lothian.

Who were her neighbours in 1861?

At the census of 07 April 1861, Isabella Wilson, Mrs Hogg, is living next to two families of Hoggs.

The first is George Hogg his wife Alison and their children Robert & Alison. George Hogg would appear to be the George Hogg born on 29 May 1809 in Tranent to William Hogg and Euphemia Brown. No blood relationship has yet been found between this family and Isabella late husband, George Hogg.

Next door are John Hogg, his wife Marion and their children Catherine, Janet, Alexander, Isabella and Mary. John Hogg may have been the John Hogg born on 15 September 1807 in Pencitland to William Hogg and Katherine Wilson. However, according to his Statutory Death Register entry (information provided by his son, William Hogg), John Hogg's parents were William Hogg & Christina Duncan.
