Biography

Ed was born on October 28, 1916 at New Holland, a mill town located on the outskirts of Gainesville, Georgia.[1][2][3][4] New Holland was built by the Pacolet Manufacturing Company in the 1890s. They bought 850 acres and went on to build the five-story Pacolet Cotton Mill, about 200 homes, a recreation building, store, school, a church that alternated Sundays between Methodists and Baptists, athletic fields and offices. In the 1920s they built a gymnasium that featured a heated swimming pool, bowling and billiards. The homes were for the management and workers. The mill was the largest textile mill in the state of Georgia. The plant and numerous homes were severely damaged in the tornadoes of 1903, then again in 1936. Dr. J.H. Downey, who later built Downey Hospital, forerunner of Northeast Georgia Medical Center, was the first New Holland doctor in a clinic that also had a dentist and nurse.[5][6] Ed was the son of Ramsey Ozell Wilson (1884-1970) and Henrietta (Cox) Wilson (aft.1887-1963).[7][8][9][3][4] He married Constance "Louise" (Jubin) Wilson (1924-2009) on April 26, 1952 in Gainesville.[10][4] The couple had two children:[11]

  • Lucinda (Cindy) Wilson
  • Rebecca (Becky) Wilson

Ed died on July 3, 2007[1] at the age of 90 from prostate cancer.[12] He is buried in the Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville, Georgia.[2][4]
