Janet: Thanks for your eMail. I do have a question. I have been doing in-depth genealogical research on my ancestors for about 2 years, using Ancestry.com to build my tree and attach records to the entries. I am up over 16,000 people in my tree now. A very large percentage of those born before 1700 were found through WikiTree. In each case, I copied and pasted the URL from WikiTree into my Ancestry.com record for that person, so I have links back to WikiTree in Ancestry.com. I am now at a point where I'd like to be a more active participant in WikiTree, so I signed the Honor Code in early April. I believe I can upload my Family Tree from Ancestry.com into WikiTree, but I want to be sure I am doing this correctly. Out of the 16,000 people in my Family Tree, my guess is that more than 13,000 of them were already in WikiTree, and I don't want to create massive duplication, so can you tell me how this works?

Hi Greg

I don't have much experience with GEDcom maximum size for a GEDcom is 5,000. I found it easier to bring mine in small batches using https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:WikiTree_X This enables me to add profiles, tidy up and add to each profile once imported. For any import from ancestry there is data that needs to be cleaned out as it can be repetitive. Also please remember that ancestry source are not open as a subscrption is need so I always add other source to support the data

Explore the following to see if these pages help the first one is a visual step by step

Hope this helps you if not let me know  or send a note to [email address removed]

All the Best Janet

Greg, have fun growing your tree.

First, make sure you check out our New Member How-To pages. They will save you time learning our system: New Member How-To pages. As a recommendation, you may want to edit your tags to show the region where you are researching the surnames you have included. The clickable tags we follow and the comments we make about them at WikiTree help us collaborate with other members. Your Wiki Genealogy Feed will show the activity connected to the surnames and places relating to your tags. This link may help you Tags.
