Virgil was born on 20 October 1888 in the Village of Tracy, Lyon County, Minnesota.[1] At the age of 6 his family moved to Oceanside, San Diego, California. His mother, Fannie, died of meningitis in 1898 when Virgil was 10.[2] Soon after his father shifted to Coquille, Coos, Oregon.[3] Virgil attended school in San Francisco[4] but graduated in Coquille on 3 June 1905.[5] In July of that year while working in the lath department of the local mill, Virgil "mangled his hand in a fearful manner" on the bolter saw requiring amputation of thumb, index, second and third fingers.[6] Dr Culin's repair has been commented upon as remarkable by numerous modern trained doctors because of the perfect healing and maximum functionality due to the preservation of opposition of the base of thumb and 5th finger.[7] Virgil married Georgia Johnson in 1914[8] and they had three children: Virgil James Jr (b. 1914), Marjorie E (1918), and Patricia G (1825). [9] During the Great Depression the family moved to Palo Alto, California.[10] Virgil continued to work in the lumbar industry throughout his life.[11] He passed away in 1985.[12]
