Nancy Wilson is mainly known as a Grammy winning jazz singer (although she preferred to be called a "song stylist"). She also hosted her own TV show, The Nancy Wilson Show, acted, and was a civil rights advocate. She won numerous awards and honors for all of these endeavors.[1]
Nancy was born on 20 Feb 1937 in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio. She mainly grew up in Columbus, Ohio, with her father and stepmother, but she spent summers in Chillicothe at her grandmother Iva Myrtle (Johnson Ryan Austin) Wingo's home. She said that "I came from a very strong family - father, step-mother, mother and grandmother - and family was more important to me than career." She began her singing career in central Ohio while still in high school, then moved to New York in Oct 1859 to further her career. In 1960, she moved to California, where she lived for the rest of her life.[2]
She married twice[3][4][5] and had three children.[2] When she visited home in Chillicothe in 1996 for the dedication of a street named after her, she was especially touched because, as she said, "I always felt I was immortal because I have children...Now my children can bring their children to see this."[6]
Nancy died on 13 Dec 2018 at her home in Pioneertown, San Bernardino, California.[7]
