I am getting confused. I am still replacing Flora. It seems that in 1909, Jane migrated to Canada with one of her sons, who may be the miller who died in Canada at age 33, unmarried.

I have re-worked the family on Wikitree. I can only ignore the Waugh surname. The data in a death record is supplied by somebody other than the person himself, and can be inaccurate. For my mother's mother's certificate, my father was the informant, and got a surname wrong. The entry for a woman who died in Victoria says that she was a member of a family, all of whom migrated to Canada. They have no record of her. In one case I saw, the grandparents were on record as the parents.

Now I'm more confused! - Have looked up your Flora Jane Waugh who had about 13 children with a William Wilson in Vic., Aus. - But was not aware of an Aus connection with John Graham Wilson's parents; he was born in Hawick 1862, and NOT to Waugh, but rather Jane MacPherson by my records (see previous note); - did father re-marry & emigrate??? Did this Flora Jane marry William RICHARDSON Wilson, or another WW; different family?

Yes, JGW's death record says mother was Waugh (could it be wrong??) But Scottish birth record DOES give mother as Jane Macpherson, as does Douglas Scott...........

(Not sure why I'm bothering with this (!) as only Jane Waldie Fisher Laidlaw is a blood relative of mine (I AM from the woollen mill family!) And Jane Waldie Fisher Laidlaw had NO children, having married JGW aged 43, after John Graham Wilson's first wife & mother of his children died.So that line of the Laidlaws ended with her.)

Flora's profile is handled by Bruce Laidlaw, who is very experienced. Maybe I shouuld not have sarted from her. .WhIle I was working on "Shaffles" Laidlaw's line, I chased the Waldie surname and finished up going around in circles. I already have a Lorn Jane McPherson elsewhere and a current Waugh family. Neither seems relevant. Douglas Scott's book seems to be well sourced. I am over 80 and have gone downhill during the past week, and I am still a bit confused. It may take me a while to get my brain back into gear.

Sorry to have popped up at an inopportune moment. (Often wonder on these sites when so many enthusiasts are a generation older than me!) Maybe Bruce Laidlaw can make sense of it all?!

Helen, I have just finished editing a profile where the wife married in Queensland, but the original profile said NSW. A suitably named husband had been found!

So I have had time to look at the Wilson couple. Every detail fits, so I will add them as John's parents. Thanks for your help.

I have seen the death record which gives mother's maiden name as "Waugh".

On MyHeritage there is a Scotland Births and Baptisms record for John Graham Wilson born Aug 1 1862 in Hawick to William Richardson Wilson & Jane Macpherson.

"A Hawick Word Book" by Douglas Scott also gives JGW's mother as Jane Macpherson, and his father as William Richard Wilson - from THE illustrious woolen mill family in Hawick; bigger than the Laidlaws?!

Thoughts?

Thanks, Helen. I will look into the Wison link.

I originally thought that I was descended from the Woollen Mills family, and I looked at what Scott wrote,Then doubts started creeping in. On the family memorial, Jane's surname was definitely Fisher, but the earliest Laidlaw in my line isn't mentioned there and we knew that my uncle's first name was Newall, after his grandmother. The family story was that the couple both came out on the same ship, but William was not on its passenger list. Then, a family Bible turned up for a short time, and Ancestry found a family that matched the names recorded there. The full story is in William's profile [ Laidlaw-619 ]
