Thomas was a 19th-century shipping magnate from Kingston upon Hull, England. In 1822 he jointly founded Thomas Wilson Sons & Co., commonly known as the Wilson Line, a shipping company. From meager beginnings Thomas' company grew allowing him to buy out his partners. The company rose along with the emergence and rise of steam shipping in Britain as it hauled iron ore from Sweden. As time went by the company got into passenger ships and ferries. When Thomas Wilson died at the age of 77 on June 21, 1869, his company was said to have over 100 ships and boats. The port of Hull where the Wilson line was based had become the third busiest port in the United Kingdom.
