Mrs. C. M. Elrod-Mrs Bessie Duvall Elrod of the New Hope Community, RT 1, Pelzer, died at her home at 1045am yesterday after a long period of declining health and a serious illness of 13 months. Mrs. Elrod was born Dec 12 1890 in Anderson Co, SC a daughter of the late J. Craig and Elizabeth Smith Wilson. Most of her life was spent in Anderson County and for 15 years she made her home in the Mount Pigsah community and moved to the the New Hope Community 2 years ago. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and of the Mother's Class of the Sunday School. Mrs. Elrod was married twice, her first marriage was to Clarence Duvall, who died in 1913. Of this union Rufus C Duvall of Easley and Clarence Duvall of the home. Her second marriage was to C. M (Duff) Elrod who died in 1931. Surviving from this union are 3 sons, John W. (Bill) Elrod and Guy M Elrod of Pendleton and Robert D. Elrod of Easley: 2 daughters Miss Hazel M Elrod and Mrs. Wilbur L Wilson of Piedmont. Also surviving are 4 stepdaughters and a stepson: 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren: 2 sisters, Mrs. Lloyd Lee of Rt 2, Greenville and Mrs. Joe Merritt of Greenville and three brothers L C Wilson of Anderson, J W Wilson of Greenville and Frank C Wilson of Rt 2 Greenville. Funeral services will be Thursday at 3pm by Rev Benny Johnson, Rev Jesse M Hill and Rev E V Cobb at New Hope Baptist Church. Burial will be in Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery in Pickens County.

1910 Census Greenville Co OakLawn Township: Clarence Duvall age 22, (son of E. Carter Devall) Annie B. age 18 and son Rufus C age 1 and 3/12. They were married for 4 years at this time and had one child.

1930 Williamston, Anderson Co SC ED 4-52 SD 1 Sheets 4A & 4B, household #68: Charles M Elrod age 61, Bessie listed as Essie age 39, Hazel 13, William 10, Bettie L age 8, Guyton M age 5 and Clarence Devall age 16 listed as stepson.

1940 Anderson Co, Brushy Creek township sheet 13A: This census infers that in 1935 family lived in Easley, Pickens Co: 1940 shows: Bessie Elrod age 50 widow, Hazel 23, William 20, Betty Lee age 18, Guyton 15, Robert 8, Larry Dean age 3 Grandson, Barbara G age 1 Grand-dau, Clarence Devall age 26. All the other children were listed as Elrod.

DC 1358 shows Charlie Elrod 1866-1/21/1938 died in York Co SC, Buried in Clover.
