Thomas Wilson was born in 1854 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire, England to William Wilson and Margaret (Mawson) Wilson. His birth was registered in Ulverston, Lancashire in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Mawson.^[1] Thomas was christened in Dalton in Furness on 2 Jul 1854.^[2]

In 1861 Thomas Wilson (age 7, Scholar) lived at Salthouse Marsh in Dalton with his father William (41, Railway Engine Driver), mother Margaret (30), and four siblings: Henry (14, Scholar), Joseph (4), Ann (2), and Margaret (1).^[3]
