When he was working at the St Nicholas Hotel in New York, he met new immigrant Fanny Connor from England who had arrived in America about 1858 and was working there as a laundress.
They were married about April 1862 only 7 months after he had enlisted and been mustered into 69th New York, a regiment also nicknamed The Fighting 60th.
Sometime in the winter of 1863-1864, Fanny gave birth to their daughter, Mary Ellen Wilson whom she named after her mother Mary and her sister Ellen.
On June 6, 1864, only 3 short months after the birth of his only child, Thomas was killed in action during the brutal fighting at Cold Harbor, Virginia and was buried in Cold Harbor National Cemetery in Mechanicsville, Hanover County, Virginia, leaving behind his young wife and their new baby.[3][4]
