Research Notes

Because there were so many men named John Wilson in Lincoln County, NC, it is hard to determine which census records apply to him. The only authoritative record is his marriage in 1804 but we do see that his widow was in the 1850 census.[4] From this, one should infer his death prior to the 1850 census date but, once again, one should be certain not to confuse him with ohter men from that area with the same name. For example, there is a John Wilson who was born in 1772 and died in 1844 and was buried in the neighboring county of Gaston.[5] This man's wife, however, is named Jane and died in 1857 whereas this John Wilson's wife was named Joannah and was still living in 1860.[6] John was still alive on 24 Jan 1829 when he posted surety for his daughter's marriage.[7]
