John Wilson was born about 1807 to John and Margaret Wilson, at St. Nicholas, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
John Wilson, bachelor, and Ann Naisbitt, spinster, were married on 21 Dec 1829 at St Andrew's in Lamesley, Durham - the witnesses were Joseph Naisbitt & Thomas Harley.[1]
There is a gap of 3 years between Jane Ann and Robert, and a gap of 5 years between Robert and Joseph, so there may have been other children born to John and Ann who died in infancy.
At the time of the 1841 Census, daughter Elizabeth Wilson, 8, was in the household of her Grandparents, John, 64, and Margaret Wilson, 69, both born in Scotland, on End Street West, at Tweedmouth, Durham, England[4].
At the time of the 1851 Census, John, 44, born St. Nicholas, Newcastle Tyne, Coal Miner and Ann Wilson, 46, born Lamesley, Durham, and their children Elizabeth, 18, Jane Ann, 17, Robert, 14, Coal Miner, all born Gateshead, Durham, Joseph, 9, born Winlaton, Durham, Sarah, 7, born Whickham, Durham, and Margaret, 5, born Lamesley, Durham, were living at Gateshead, Durham. A visitor in the household at the time of the Census was George Jordan, 20, born Hartley, Northumberland, Coal Miner, who became Elizabeth's husband[5].
The 1861 Census recorded John, 54, Coal Miner, born Newcastle on Tyne, and Ann Wilson, 56, and daugher Margaret, 14, both born Washington, Durham, and Grandson John, 8, born Earsdon, Northumberland, living at District 11, Lamesley, Durham[6].
The 1871 Census recorded John, 64, born Northum., NC, Coal Miner, and Ann Wilson, 65, born Durham, ?, living at String Pit Cottages with their grandson, John Stephenson, 19, born Earsdon, Northumberland, a Railway Labourer[7][8].
John WIlson was widowed sometime before the 1881 Census which recorded John Wilson, 75, Widower, living at Ushaw Moor, Lanchester, Durham, in the household of son-in-law, William Ather, 36, Coal Miner, and daughter Margaret, 34, and their children, Joseph, 11, Hannah, 8, Ann, 7, and Thomas, 6[9].
Research Notes
A John Wilson, aged 78, died at Easington, Durham, in the March Quarter of 1886. There are a couple of other John Wilson's who died at Durham before the 1891 Census, who were the correct age but not the right location, who could also have been him. The one I think is correct is @ [2]. Actual copies of the death certificate or other corroborating information will need to be obtained to determine which is the correct date of death.
Grandson John Stephenson of the 1871 Census was the child of daughter Hannah, pursuant to his registration of birth, a digital copy of which was purchased on 10 April, 2024. She married William Stephenson in 1852. Profiles need to be created for Hannah, etc.
A Margaret Wilson died in 1848, aged 88, and was buried at St. Cuthbert, Darlington, Durham. This could have been John's mother. More research is needed. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
